The Practice of Peace Daycare Centers Provide High-Quality Care and Learning Opportunities.

According to a review of the pertinent research, students who attend high-quality preschool programs reap benefits that can last through school and their lives. The study finds that those children who attend these programs are more prepared for school and experience substantial learning gains than children who do not attend preschool.

Much research on early learning programs reveals that benefits for children lasted into adulthood, inspiring many states to invest in preschool programs.   Researchers found that investments in quality preschool programs bolster student success. Students who attend preschool programs are more prepared for school and are less likely to be identified as having special needs and "held back" in elementary school than children who did not attend preschool. Studies also show apparent positive effects on children's early literacy and mathematics skills. The review affirms the short- and long-term benefits of many preschool programs and makes recommendations for how policymakers can implement and support high-quality programs.

POP has designed and implemented effective preschool programs that deliver on its promise. We ensure that we employ well-qualified educators to demonstrate the most substantial and most persistent positive effects. POP teachers use a developmentally appropriate program and provide adequate learning time for students. To achieve sustained benefits from preschool, POP invests in the essential building blocks of high-quality early childhood education, including:

*Early learning standards and curricula that address the whole child are developmentally appropriate, and we implemented them effectively.
*Assessments that consider children's academic, social-emotional, and physical progress implement and contribute to instructional and program planning.
*Well-prepared teachers who provide engaging interactions with children. We hire teachers that provide classroom environments that support learning.
*Ongoing support for teachers, including coaching and mentoring.
*Support for English learners and students with special needs.
  *Meaningful family engagement.
  *Sufficient learning time.
*Small class sizes with low student-teacher ratios.
*Program assessments that measure structural quality and classroom interactions.
*A well-implemented state quality rating and improvement system.

In summary, POP daycare centers require exceptional teacher preparation, a thoughtful curriculum, meaningful family engagement, and support for English learners and students with special needs.
Although these elements can be expensive, high-quality preschool will pay for itself when implementing and supporting preschool gains with subsequent quality schooling programs. Studies of high-quality programs that have followed students into adulthood find up to $17 returned in social benefits for every dollar invested. We observe these returns because people who attend preschool are more productive in school, work, and society generally—with higher levels of education and earnings, less involvement in delinquency and crime, and fewer chronic health problems.

Even when we only follow students through elementary school, studies find significant benefits from preschool in lower grade retention and special education rates that offer a partial return on the investment. High-quality preschool programs can also help close the gap in school and life outcomes between those raised in low-income families and their wealthier peers.

POP sets clear expectations for educators' knowledge and skills, supporting educators to reach those expectations and establishing ongoing program improvement mechanisms.
